April 12 | ``350 Years of Logging in NH'' - Professor Don Quigley of the University of NH. This presentation relates to the introduction of sawmills into Colonial NH, the Mast Pine Act of 1691, the rise of Timber Barons, the impact of the Hurricane of 1938 and the evolution of modern logging. | ||||||||

May 10 | ``New Hampshire's Muster Day Tradition'' - Jack Noon, popular author of several books on N. H. History. Jack will focus on the hierarchy of NH's militia and how each town ``fit in'' to this structure. The discussion will cover the military and social aspects of muster days including the town of Washington's regimental affiliations, research into the story of Samuel Jones whose leg was amputated in 1804 and now resides in our ``old cemetery'', and finally, the demise of the muster day tradition. | ||||||||
June 14 | ``A Living History- The Life and Times of the American Trapper in the 1820's" - Charles & Kathy Chalk. Our speakers, appearing in ``period dress'', will recreate the look and personality of the times. A display of authentic hand-made items will be shown, including clothing, guns and survival gear. | ||||||||
July 3 | Washington Snow Rider- Local Snowmobile Club- Annual Fourth of July Flea Market. Saturday the on Town Common, 9:00AM to 2PM- the Society's major fundraiser. Please contact any Officer or Board Member to pick up any items you may want to donate to our table. | ||||||||
July 12 | ``Weather wise of Other wise''- Judson D. Hale, Sr. Editor of Yankee Publishing, Inc. We are fortunate indeed to enjoy a rare opportunity of sharing an evening with Judd Hale, Editor of ``Yankee Magazine'' and ``The Old Farmer's Almanac''. Judd will tantalize us with a potpourri of issues, both humorous & serious. Don't be surprised if he offers us some ``sneak'' prognostications from the Millennium Issue of the ``Almanac 2000''. | ||||||||

| Aug 14 | ``Town Founding in NH'' -
Jere Daniell,
Professor of History, Dartmouth College. We are please to
welcome back an old friend and outstanding speaker. This
evening will describe how NH towns attained their legal
existence, including patterns of land distributions and
settlements. Of great interest to most of us, he will discuss
the historical issues and circumstances relating to the
founding of our own town - Washington, NH. Don't miss
this one.
| Sep 13 | ``Number Please: NH Telephone Operators in the Pre-Dial Era'' -
Judith Moyer,
Professor of History, U.N.H. In this highly interactive
presentation, the audience is encouraged to share their own
memories and stories of telephone operators, how technology
effected operator's roles in large and small communities and
the prevailing beliefs of ``women's work''. Informative and
humorous.

| ``The Natural History of New England'' Dr Margery Milne, former
Processor of Biological Science at UNH. This slide show discussion
will identify the birds and wildlife native to the four seasons of our
area. Margery will also share memorable experiences she enjoyed
while traveling the world to study water for National Geographic.
